Cycling in Abingdon & Damascus
Best season: April–October
Abingdon and Damascus anchor the two ends of the Virginia Creeper Trail, one of America’s most beloved rail-trails — 34 miles of trestle-studded former railbed through the Blue Ridge foothills. Abingdon, a historic theater-and-inn town off I-81, holds the hotels; Damascus, seventeen trail miles east, is the tiny “Trail Town USA” where the outfitters cluster and the Appalachian Trail runs down Main Street.
One important note for now: the famous Whitetop-to-Damascus downhill has been closed since Hurricane Helene washed out its trestles in 2024, with a full federal rebuild underway and reopening estimated for late 2026. The Abingdon–Damascus valley half is fully open, and it’s a lovely ride — gentle grades past farms, river bottoms, and shaded creek crossings, with shuttles running daily so you can pedal it one-way.
The rental economy here is the real thing: multiple shops in Damascus rent comfort bikes, kids’ bikes, and e-bikes from around $30 a day with shuttle combos near $40, waivers signed at the counter. In Abingdon, the Martha Washington Inn & Spa keeps complimentary town bicycles for guests and runs its own Creeper Trail shuttle excursion, while trailhead cottages sit next door to the Abingdon bike shop.
Outfitter season runs roughly March through November. October is peak — the fall color through the valley is spectacular, so book bikes and rooms well ahead, and check trail status before planning around Whitetop.
