Cycling in Albuquerque
Best season: March–May, September–November
Albuquerque’s ace is the Paseo del Bosque Trail — 16 paved miles along the Rio Grande, uninterrupted by a single road crossing, running from Alameda Boulevard in the north to Rio Bravo in the south. It threads the cottonwood bosque the whole way, passing the Rio Grande Nature Center and the ABQ BioPark, and its dead-flat profile makes it one of the most beginner- and family-friendly marquee rides in the Southwest.
Old Town is the natural base camp. Routes Bicycle Tours & Rentals sits a five-minute pedal from the trail with hybrids, cruisers, and e-bikes, plus a menu of themed tours — riverside history, tacos, urban art, even a Breaking Bad ride. North of downtown, Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm keeps a “bike barn” of loaner cruisers beside its lavender fields, perfect for exploring the North Valley’s ditch-bank lanes toward the river.
The city claims over 300 days of sunshine, but plan around the heat: ride mornings in summer, and expect glorious, cool conditions in spring and fall. If you’re here for October’s Balloon Fiesta, the bosque trail doubles as a front-row seat to mass ascensions — just start early and expect company.
