Cycling in Alta (Grand Targhee)

Best season: June–September

Alta is a tiny community on the quiet west slope of the Tetons with one very big draw: the Grand Targhee Bike Park, where lifts serve more than 2,000 vertical feet of downhill and over 70 miles of multi-use trails fan out across the mountain — everything from gentle, rolling cross-country loops to steep rock gardens. When lower elevations bake in midsummer, Targhee’s altitude keeps the riding cool.

This is a stay-where-you-ride destination. The resort’s slopeside lodges — Teewinot Lodge, the budget-friendly Targhee Lodge and the condo-style Sioux Lodge Suites — sit on the same plaza as the Habitat Mountainside rental shop, so you can walk out, pick up a downhill rig, e-MTB or kids’ bike (helmets and armor included), and be on the lift in minutes. The resort’s bike school adds lessons and guided rides for first-timers and families.

There’s no town at the base: the nearest full-service bike shop and groceries are a short drive down Ski Hill Road in Driggs, Idaho. Rental inventory on the mountain is limited, so reserve bikes online before you arrive — and aim for mid-June through September, when the bike park runs and the high trails are clear of snow.
