Cycling in Anchorage
Best season: May–September (long daylight); winter is fat-bike season
Anchorage is a trailhead city. Its signature ride, the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, runs about 11 paved miles from downtown out to Kincaid Park, hugging Cook Inlet the whole way with views of the Chugach Mountains, Denali on a clear day, and — genuinely often — moose grazing beside the path. It links into a wider paved greenbelt (the Chester Creek Trail via Westchester Lagoon), so you can stitch together a long car-free day without leaving the city.
Two downtown stays make it easy to roll straight onto the trail: one B&B lends guests free bicycles for a picnic ride, and a historic inn has a Trek rental kiosk parked out front all summer. A couple of well-stocked rental shops sit a block off the trail too, one with a fleet of 250-plus bikes.
Prime season is the long-daylight stretch from May through September. Come winter, this turns into a genuine fat-tire scene — several shops rent studded fat bikes for the snow-packed trail.
