Cycling in Asheville
Best season: April–June, September–October
Asheville is the base camp for some of the best riding in the eastern United States. Drop into the rooty, technical singletrack of Pisgah National Forest just south of town — Bent Creek’s beginner-to-intermediate network is the gateway — or drive twenty minutes further to the flowy, waterfall-laced trails of DuPont State Recreational Forest. Road and gravel riders, meanwhile, climb straight onto the Blue Ridge Parkway from the edge of the city.
Not every visitor wants to shuttle to the forest, and Asheville rewards them too. The Biltmore Estate keeps more than twenty miles of gentle private trails along the French Broad River, and its on-site Bike Barn rents mountain, comfort, and e-bikes by the session — the safest, most family-friendly riding in the area. Closer to downtown, the paved paths of the Wilma Dykeman RiverWay are steadily knitting the River Arts District together.
Lodging fits both styles. The Element Asheville Downtown lends guests free loaner bikes for spinning around the city, while the Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate puts you steps from the Bike Barn and the estate trail network. For real trail days, Liberty Bicycles rents gravel and mountain bikes in south Asheville, and WayOut Adventure Rentals will deliver a full-suspension Trek straight to your hotel.
Spring and fall are prime — summer afternoons bring mountain thunderstorms, and October color draws crowds, so book bikes and rooms ahead. If you only have a half day and don’t want to drive, an e-bike brewery crawl or historic-downtown tour handles Asheville’s famously steep streets for you.
