Athens is a cycling town first and foremost because of the Athens Twilight Criterium, the downtown night race founded by Gene Dixon in 1980 as the first modern nighttime criterium in the US. Run each spring on a tight city-center loop (the 2026 edition was held April 17–18), it draws tens of thousands of spectators and anchors a serious local road and gravel culture. Beyond race weekend, Athens sits at the edge of the north Georgia Piedmont and Blue Ridge foothills, with quiet country and gravel roads feeding events like the long Athens-to-Savannah gravel ride, plus climbing-heavy foothills routes near Dahlonega and Helen. In town, the Firefly Trail — a rail-trail planned to reach about 39 miles toward Union Point — has roughly five paved miles open in Athens-Clarke County, with more segments under construction.
For lodging, the downtown Graduate by Hilton sits near UGA and the Twilight course and is reported to offer complimentary loaner bikes, while the LEED-certified Hotel Indigo Athens has gated secure parking a few blocks away and historically lent cruiser bikes to guests (a perk no longer advertised — confirm before counting on it). To rent, The Hub Bicycles in Five Points is the local Trek dealer and rents to visitors with helmets, locks and lights and will even deliver within the city; downtown’s Ben’s Bikes is also reported to rent from around $20/day. Commercial guided day-tours are essentially nonexistent locally (Viator and GetYourGuide “Athens” bike tours are all for Athens, Greece); the main option is Carolina Tailwinds’ fully-supported multi-day tour that starts in Athens.
Every April downtown Athens hosts the Athens Twilight Criterium, a floodlit night crit that has drawn pro and amateur racers since 1980 — one of the Southeast’s best-known bike-racing weekends.
