Cycling in Atlanta

Best season: March–May, September–November (summer mornings only)

Atlanta’s cycling scene orbits the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile loop of multi-use trail being stitched together on old rail corridors around the city core. The flagship stretch is the Eastside Trail — a gentle railroad-grade ribbon running from Piedmont Park past Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market to Reynoldstown, dense with murals, food halls, and breweries. It’s urban riding at its most entertaining: you’ll stop more for street art and snacks than for traffic.

Getting on a bike is easy even without bringing one. Bike Barn Atlanta rents cruisers, e-bikes, kids’ bikes, and trailers from a barn in Old Fourth Ward just steps off the Eastside Trail, and MUSETTE delivers Cannondale rentals — helmet, lock, lights, and route guides included — straight to hotels and Airbnbs within about four miles of Midtown. On the hotel side, both Atlanta Kimptons keep complimentary loaner bikes: the Shane in Midtown Union (about a mile and a half from the trail) and the Sylvan in Buckhead.

Guided options are real here too — Bicycle Tours of Atlanta runs ~2.5-hour, 8-mile rides covering the BeltLine, Oakland Cemetery, the mural districts, and a Civil Rights route, bookable direct or on Viator. Riders chasing distance can day-trip to the Silver Comet Trail, 61+ paved rail-trail miles starting about 13 miles northwest in Smyrna.

The BeltLine itself is nearly flat, but the streets around it are genuinely hilly, and Atlanta summers are hot and humid — ride mornings in July and August. Spring and fall are prime, and the Eastside Trail gets crowded on warm weekends, so start early there too.
