Cycling in Bainbridge Island

Bainbridge Island is Seattle’s easiest bike escape: hop the Washington State Ferry from downtown (about 35 minutes across Puget Sound), roll off at Winslow, and you’re on quiet, rolling rural roads within minutes. The signature ride is the ~35-mile island loop — forest, shoreline, farms, and a string of wineries — and the island is famous for the late-winter “Chilly Hilly” ride that kicks off the Northwest cycling season.
You can travel car-free and still ride. A shop right at the ferry terminal rents e-bikes (helmet, lock, and route map included), a downtown Winslow shop rents e-cruisers plus road, gravel, and mountain bikes and runs a guided South Loop e-bike tour, and a Winslow inn lends guests bikes to pedal straight from the door. The landmark Classic Cycle shop (with its own bicycle museum) is a fun stop just up the street.
Ride May through October for the driest, warmest weather; in the shoulder seasons pack layers and rain gear — this is the Pacific Northwest.
Time your visit for the Grand Old Fourth of July, downtown Winslow’s Independence Day tradition since 1967 — a parade, street fair, and live music a short pedal from the ferry dock.
