Cycling in Baker City

Best season: May–September

Baker City sits at about 3,450 feet in the wide Powder River valley, with the Elkhorn Mountains rising to the west and quiet, big-sky highways running out in every direction. The town anchors the Baker City Cycling Classic, a three-day, four-stage road race held in late June: an individual time trial on Pocahontas Road, a downtown criterium through the historic core, and two long road-race stages that culminate in the 101-mile Dooley Mountain stage. Away from race week the same terrain is the draw, with paved climbs toward Anthony Lakes and Sumpter, gravel forest roads in the Elkhorns, and the well-preserved brick downtown as a base. The riding season runs roughly May through September; higher passes hold snow into early summer.

Lodging centers on the landmark Geiser Grand Hotel, an 1889 National Historic Landmark at Main and Washington that is listed as a Travel Oregon Bike Friendly Business (bike mechanic on call and long-term parking) and sits two blocks from the town’s bike shop. For rentals, service, and local route knowledge, The Trailhead Bike & Ski Shop on Main Street is Baker County’s outdoor hub, renting cruisers for around town and running seasonal demo bikes; it is an authorized dealer for Devinci, Giant, Scott, and Specialized. Road and gravel riders generally bring their own bikes and use The Trailhead for support and trail maps.

The Baker City Cycling Classic itself is the town’s marquee bookable cycling event; registration runs through BikeReg, and the 2026 edition is confirmed for June 26–28.

Baker City marks its gold-mining heritage on the third weekend of July with Miners Jubilee, a three-day festival of a parade, gold-panning championship, and street fair — a lively stop if you’re touring the Elkhorn or Hells Canyon backroads.
