Cycling in Baton Rouge

Best season: October–April

Louisiana’s capital hides a surprisingly good urban ride: the Baton Rouge Levee Bike Path, a paved route atop the Mississippi River levee running about 13 miles from downtown past the LSU campus. The downtown stretch is 15 feet wide with separate lanes for bikes and walkers, plus lighting, benches and water fountains — and constant views of river barges and the Louisiana State Capitol.

It’s an easy destination to ride without a car. Hotel Indigo Baton Rouge Downtown sits a block off the levee and advertises complimentary bikes for guests, and Pedego’s downtown shop at 602 Main Street rents electric bikes a few minutes’ pedal from the trailhead, with packaged routes through the Garden District’s live oaks and the Capitol area.

The levee top is completely exposed, so ride early or late in the warm months and bring more water than you think you need. October through April is the sweet spot, when mild Gulf-South winters make for perfect flat-road cruising — and LSU game-day Saturdays turn the levee into the best tailgate-watching ride in the state.
