Cycling in Beech Mountain

Best season: late May–September

At 5,506 feet, Beech Mountain is the highest incorporated town in the eastern US — which means genuinely cool summer air and, at Beech Mountain Bike Park, North Carolina’s first lift-served downhill. The summit is chairlift-only (no self-shuttling), and bikes ride up on trays mounted to the lift while you follow in the chair behind. Trails span four tiers from green flow to double-black tech, and the park runs Thursday through Sunday from late May into late September. Day tickets are refreshingly cheap by resort standards — $56 adult, with a $44 four-hour pass and single rides for $20.

The resort’s own rental center makes trying gravity easy: full-suspension enduro bikes at $150, downhill rigs at $175, and every rental includes a full-face helmet and body armor. The e-bike package even bundles a lift ticket. Down in Boone, Magic Cycles rents full-suspension and DH bikes (including a Santa Cruz V10) and runs shuttles for riders basing off-mountain.

When you want to earn your turns, the free Emerald Outback delivers about seven miles of cross-country singletrack along the summit ridge above 5,000 feet — one of the highest trail systems on the East Coast, open year-round. First time on a downhill bike? The resort runs half-day group lessons that fold in the bike and gear, plus private coaching and custom guided tours of the mountain. No verified bike-program hotel sits on the mountain yet, so pair a Beech or Banner Elk stay with the resort rental shop.
