Cycling in Bend

Best season: April–October

Bend sits in Oregon’s sunny high desert on the Deschutes River, and it’s one of the few American towns where “bike destination” means everything at once. The headliner is the Phil’s Trail Complex, a sprawling singletrack network in the Deschutes National Forest just ten minutes west of downtown — dozens of miles of flowy, pine-scented trails ranging from mellow beginner loops to jumps and rock gardens (note: e-bikes aren’t allowed on Phil’s trails).

If knobby tires aren’t your thing, the Deschutes River Trail runs right through town and south toward Sunriver, and the paved paths around the Old Mill District make an easy cruise between breweries. That’s where the hotel bikes shine: a downtown boutique hotel lends complimentary seasonal cruisers, a riverfront lodge hosts an on-site rental kiosk, and another hotel rents bikes by the hour from the front desk.

Serious riders should book a demo instead — Bend’s shops carry current full-suspension, gravel, and e-bikes, with the biggest fleets stationed on the road out to Phil’s. Guided, shuttle-assisted half-day rides are easy to add if you want a local to show you the best lines.

Prime season is roughly April through October. It’s high desert: mornings are cool, afternoons are dusty and dry, and the higher trails toward Mt. Bachelor don’t melt out until early summer — carry more water than you think you need.
