Cycling in Big Sky

Best season: mid-June–mid-September

Big Sky is where Montana does gravity riding at scale. The Big Sky Resort Bike Park stacks more than 50 miles of trail across the mountain, with 20-plus miles of it lift-served downhill — flow trails that let beginners find their feet alongside double-black rock and jump lines like Swifty and Ninja Marmot that challenge park regulars. Three lifts do the climbing for you: Ramcharger 8 and the Explorer Gondola run daily, with Swift Current 6 added Friday through Sunday. The season runs mid-June to mid-September, and summer weekends stretch into sunset gondola laps.

This is full-face-helmet terrain, so most riders rent purpose-built bikes. The resort’s own shop, Different Spoke at Snowcrest Lodge, rents dual-suspension downhill and enduro rigs with a full-face helmet and pads included; in Town Center, Gallatin Alpine Sports rents Trek Session and other DH bikes with gear. Prefer a mellower day? The Big Sky Community Organization maintains 20-plus miles of free valley trail — the gravel Crail Ranch Trail through a historic meadow and the climbing Uplands loop are easy family-friendly options.

For lodging, The Wilson Hotel in Town Center leans into biking with cruisers and concierge bike delivery, while slopeside Huntley Lodge puts you steps from the lifts (confirm its bike arrangement by phone). New to gravity? The resort’s mountain-sports school runs group and private downhill lessons, and a lesson-plus-rental-plus-ticket bundle is the cheapest way to try it all.
