Cycling in Boise
Best season: April–October
Boise is one of the easiest bike-and-hotel pairings in the West. The Boise River Greenbelt — 25 miles of paved, tree-lined, car-free path along the river — threads right past downtown, through the Boise State campus, and out to Garden City’s breweries and wineries, and it’s flat enough that a single-speed cruiser is genuinely all you need.
Two downtown hotels hand you that cruiser for free: The Grove Hotel keeps both cruisers and mountain bikes at the front desk for guests, first come first served, with helmets, locks, lights and baskets included, and The Modern Hotel checks out its house cruisers from the front desk — from there it’s a few blocks down 13th Street to Shoreline Park and the river. Out in Garden City, the Riverside Hotel sits steps off the path and rents bikes on site.
If you’d rather ride electric, Greenbelt Ebike Rentals puts cruiser, fat-tire, and kid-size e-bikes straight onto the path daily from $25 an hour, and McU Sports downtown rents everything from $40-a-day city cruisers to full- suspension mountain bikes with helmet and lock included — handy, because the Ridge to Rivers foothills trail network starts just above town. For a guided introduction, Boise Bicycle Tours runs a relaxed three-hour, ten-mile Greenbelt loop for $59 with bike and helmet provided.
Boise rides most of the year, but summers run hot — do the Greenbelt in the morning, and note that local shops won’t rent mountain or gravel bikes when the foothills are muddy, a Ridge to Rivers etiquette rule worth respecting.
