Cycling in Boulder City
Best season: October–April
Boulder City, the small town that built Hoover Dam, is southern Nevada’s best bike base. Its signature ride is the Historic Railroad Trail: an old construction-railroad grade that rolls about 3.7 miles from the edge of Lake Mead National Recreation Area to the dam itself, passing through five broad tunnels blasted in 1931, with the blue of Lake Mead spread out below the whole way. It’s flat, wide, and beginner-friendly — the round trip is under eight miles.
Riders who want a real day out link into the River Mountains Loop Trail, a paved ~34-mile circuit around the River Mountains through Boulder City, Henderson, and the national recreation area. Gravity fans get a bonus: Bootleg Canyon’s famous desert mountain-bike park sits right above town.
Lodging is unusually bike-forward for a town this size. The Hoover Dam Lodge sells room-and-bike packages and has both trails starting from its parking lot, while the lakefront Westin at Lake Las Vegas (on the Henderson side of the loop) reportedly rents bikes from its recreation desk. In town, All Mountain Cyclery rents e-bikes and mountain bikes and runs shuttles.
This is desert riding: plan for October through April, and in warmer months start at dawn and carry more water than you think you need. The railroad trail has no shade and no water sources once you leave the trailhead.
