Cycling in Boulder

Best season: May–October

Boulder is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the US, with an extensive network of multi-use paths (the Boulder Creek Path chief among them), protected bike lanes, and quick access to foothills climbs and singletrack. Downtown, Pearl Street and the CU campus are easy to reach on two wheels, and paved paths connect to trailheads at Chautauqua Park.

For a bike-centered stay, A-Lodge Boulder sits at the mouth of Fourmile Canyon and rents Murf electric bikes (discounted for guests) for exploring the canyon and Boulder Creek paths. In town, the St Julien Hotel & Spa is widely reported to offer complimentary cruiser bikes for guests, though guests should confirm current availability at booking.

Rentals are easy to find: University Bicycles on Pearl Street rents town, road, gravel, mountain, and e-bikes with helmet, lock, and flat kit included, and Boulder Nordic & Cycle Sport on Valmont Road offers online rental reservations. Guided electric-cruiser tours run daily from operators like Boulder Tour Company and Colorado eBike Tours. Riding is best from late spring through fall.

In a town as devoted to two wheels as it is to running, Boulder’s signature event is the BolderBoulder 10K, held every Memorial Day since 1979 — a costumed, citizen-friendly race of tens of thousands that ends with a Memorial Day tribute inside CU’s Folsom Field.
