Cycling in Bozeman

Best season: May–October

Bozeman’s calling card is Main Street to the Mountains, the Gallatin Valley Land Trust’s network of more than 80 miles of trail that stitches downtown to the surrounding public lands. From a Main Street coffee stop you can pedal the Gallagator or the Sourdough corridor out of town and be climbing toward the foothills within minutes — a three-dollar paper map from local retailers covers the whole system.

The mountain menu scales up fast: Bridger-foothills singletrack sits just up Bridger Canyon, and bigger rides wait south toward Hyalite and the Gallatin Range on the way to Yellowstone. Downtown itself is flat and compact, which is why cruiser bikes work so well here for the brewery-and-campus circuit.

Two downtown hotels lean into it. The RSVP Hotel lends guests vintage-style beach cruisers for free, and the Kimpton Armory — a block off Main — offers the brand’s customary loaner bikes (worth a call to confirm details). For real hardware, Owenhouse Cycling rents everything from townies to full-suspension e-mountain bikes a half block off Main, and Bangtail Bikes rents from its Main Street shop starting around $59 a day. A local outfit, Bozeman Bike Tours, runs relaxed 2.5-hour guided town rides that meet at Owenhouse.

Note one quirk if you rent: Owenhouse bikes aren’t allowed at lift-served bike parks, so plan on trail rides rather than shuttle laps. June through September is the sweet spot; high trails hold snow well into early summer.
