Cycling in Brevard

Best season: April–June, September–October

Small as it is, Brevard punches far above its weight as a mountain-bike destination, and geography is the reason: it sits directly between two of the East’s marquee riding areas. Pisgah National Forest serves up raw, rooty, rock-strewn singletrack and burly descents like Farlow Gap, the kind of terrain that makes riders’ reputations. Fifteen minutes the other direction, DuPont State Recreational Forest trades gnarl for flow, threading fast, grippy trails past a string of famous waterfalls.

This is not cruiser country — bring a real mountain bike or rent one. Downtown, Earth Mountain Bicycle rents by the day, while The Bike Farm out in Pisgah Forest rents full-suspension Yetis and, crucially, holds permits to guide in both Pisgah and DuPont. For a hand-held introduction, Pura Vida Adventures runs guided rides from beginner loops in DuPont to full-day and multi-day Pisgah trips.

Lodging here is built around riders. The Sunset Motel, a walkable retro motor-court in downtown Brevard, offers a bike wash and lets you keep your bike in the room — a longtime favorite for MTB weekends. The Hampton Inn Brevard, just outside downtown, rounds out the options for a more standard hotel stay near the trailheads.

Ride spring through fall; Pisgah stays open much of the year but turns muddy after rain, so give trails a day to drain. Summer is humid and busy, and October color peaks — plan around it and pack layers for the elevation.
