Cycling in Bristol

Best season: April–October

Bristol owns the southern trailhead of the East Bay Bike Path, a paved 14.5-mile rail-trail that follows the old Providence–Bristol railroad grade along the Narragansett Bay shoreline to India Point Park in Providence. It’s dead flat and family-friendly the whole way, crossing coves, salt marshes, and bay bridges through Warren, Barrington, and Riverside — with the ice-cream and coffee stops in Warren practically a required checkpoint.

The logistics here are unusually easy. The Bristol Harbor Inn sits on Thames Street with the bike path adjacent, and its amenity fee includes discounted rentals at Bristol Bikes, the shop effectively next door — a genuine hotel-advertised partnership rather than a vague “bikes nearby” claim. Bristol Bikes rents single-speed cruisers from $17 for two hours and pedal-assist e-bikes from $39, with 24-hour rentals by reservation; Rhode Island law requires e-bike riders to be at least 16.

Beyond the rail-trail, tack on the shoreline loop roads of Colt State Park about a mile from downtown, or ride the path north and back for a satisfying 29-mile out-and-back. Riders starting from the Providence end can rent hybrids at Providence Bicycle (reserve ahead) and finish with dinner on Bristol’s harbor.

Spring through fall is prime; summer weekends get busy with strollers and skaters near the trailheads, so start early or aim for a weekday. July 4th week is Bristol’s famous parade season — festive, but book the inn well ahead.
