Cycling in Cable
Best season: June–October
Cable sits in the near-wilderness of northwest Wisconsin’s Chequamegon National Forest, at the center of the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) network — over 300 miles of marked and mapped singletrack, doubletrack, and forest-road routes spanning Bayfield and Sawyer counties. The famous Birkie ski trail doubles as summer riding, and the town hosts the Chequamegon MTB Festival and Birkie Epic Bike Fest.
This is a small town, so bike-friendly lodging looks like a cabin or lodge rather than a big hotel. The Start Line Inn offers bike-in/bike-out luxury cabin lodging on the Birkie and CAMBA trails, with an on-site full-service bike shop for repairs and secure storage. Lakewoods Resort, on Lake Namakagon, has CAMBA access from its property and rents bikes through its marina.
Rentals are limited and worth booking ahead. In Cable, Trek Bicycle Telemark Village at Mt. Telemark Village handles rentals and service (seasonal — closed in deep winter, open by the February Birkie). The larger New Moon Ski & Bike, about 15 miles south in Hayward, keeps a deeper fleet: full-suspension mountain bikes and fat bikes around $75 for a 24-hour rental and Specialized/Pivot e-MTBs from roughly $95. The riding season runs about June through October.
Cable anchors the Chequamegon MTB Festival each September, the country’s oldest big-time mountain-bike race — a mass-start 40-miler from Hayward to Cable over the Birkebeiner ski trail, plus a shorter Short & Fat and a full festival weekend around it.
