Cape Cod’s cycling spine is the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a 27.5-mile paved path built on an 1865 railroad bed that runs from Yarmouth through Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, and Eastham to Wellfleet. It is flat, car-free, and entirely asphalt, rolling past cranberry bogs, kettle ponds, salt marshes, and the pine woods of Nickerson State Park, with a spur (the Old Colony Rail Trail) branching to Chatham and connections into the Cape Cod National Seashore.
The riding suits nearly everyone — families with trailers, casual cruisers, and roadies using the trail as a spine for longer loops out to Coast Guard Beach or Provincetown. Brewster is the natural base: two rental shops sit right on Underpass Road beside the trail, and Ocean Edge Resort runs its own guest-only bike shops next to a trail access point.
Hotel bikes are a genuine Cape tradition here. Chatham Bars Inn lends bikes to guests for rides to Chatham Lighthouse or onto the rail trail, and the Platinum Pebble Boutique Inn in West Harwich sends guests off with complimentary bikes, helmets, locks, and even detachable picnic baskets. If you’d rather rent, trailside shops in Brewster and Eastham deliver to many mid-Cape towns.
Practical tip: July and August weekends get crowded near the Dennis and Brewster trailheads — start before 9 AM or ride the quieter Orleans-to-Wellfleet stretch. Shoulder season (May–June, September–October) offers the same scenery with far less traffic, though some seasonal shops trim their hours.
