Best season: May–October
Cape May, at the southern tip of the Jersey Shore, is about as easy as bike travel gets: the whole island is flat, compact, and gridded with gas-lit Victorian streets. The signature ride is the Cape May Point loop — out Sunset Boulevard past Sunset Beach, up to the 1859 lighthouse at Cape May Point State Park, and back along the meadows and Beach Avenue, roughly 6–8 unhurried miles on quiet roads.
This is one of the best hotel-bike towns on the East Coast. The Grand Hotel includes complimentary bikes with your stay, B&Bs like Wilbraham Mansion and the Mission Inn keep free cruisers for guests, and Congress Hall runs an on-site bike shop renting everything from kids’ bikes to surreys and e-bikes. If you need more than a cruiser, Shields’ Bike Rental and Cape Island Bikes both rent within blocks of the beach.
One rule worth knowing: the oceanfront Promenade allows bikes only from 4 to 10 a.m. between mid-May and mid-September, and e-bikes are banned from it at all times. Make the Promenade your sunrise ride, then spend the rest of the day on the streets and the Point loop.
