Cycling in Carlsbad
Best season: year-round (mild coastal)
Carlsbad rides are almost all flat and coastal. The Carlsbad Boulevard seawall path traces the bluffs above the beach, and the city’s roughly 3.4-mile segment of the Coastal Rail Trail (part of a growing Oceanside-to-San Diego corridor along the Coaster rail line) links the Village to Tamarack; from there riders continue south past Batiquitos Lagoon or north toward Oceanside. Beach cruisers suit the seawall, while e-bikes make the longer coastal runs and the ride up to Legoland easy.
For a cyclist base near the sand, the Beach Terrace Inn sits directly on the beach in the Village and lends guests complimentary beach cruisers. The Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort, a block away, does not keep its own fleet but partners with Pedego Electric Bikes caddy-corner in the Carlsbad Village Faire, giving guests a discount voucher on rentals.
To rent, Carlsbad e-Bikes & More sits at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard and rents e-bikes, cruisers and road bikes with helmet and lock included. Coastal eBike, just down the coast in Solana Beach, rents Specialized, Trek and Rad Power e-bikes and runs guided coastal rides that reach the North County beaches. Pedego in the Village rounds out the e-bike options.
Each spring, roughly March through early May, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch open 55 acres of ranunculus in bloom just off the coast — an easy add-on to a ride along the Coastal Rail Trail.
