Cycling in Cave City

Best season: April–October

Cave City is the gateway to Mammoth Cave National Park, and the surprise is how good the riding is above ground. The Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike & Hike Trail follows nine miles of the historic 1886 tourist railroad from the visitor center, rolling past interpretive waysides, old rail sites, and scenic overlooks on a family-friendly grade. Add the park’s quiet roads and the Big Hollow singletrack and you can easily fill a day between cave tours.

That pairing — a cave in the morning, a ride in the afternoon — is the whole appeal, and it suits casual riders and families more than hard-charging mountain bikers. E-bikes make the rolling terrain effortless.

You don’t need to haul a bike. The Lodge at Mammoth Cave, right by the visitor center, rents bikes and e-bikes to guests through the Caver’s Camp Store, so you can roll from your room to the trailhead. In town, Adventures of Mammoth Cave rents mountain e-bikes from $45 and runs a “Park and Ride” package for riders heading into the park.

Ride April through October, when the park is fully in season and the camp-store rental counter is open. Note that lodge bike rentals are first-come, first-served and only run 7 AM to 3 PM — get there early on summer weekends, or reserve an e-bike in Cave City the night before.
