Cycling in Charleston

Best season: March–May, October–November

Charleston’s historic peninsula is pancake-flat and compact, which is why so many of its boutique hotels — Hotel Emeline, Zero George, The Dewberry, the French Quarter Inn — keep fleets of complimentary cruisers at the door. Rainbow Row, The Battery and the French Quarter reveal themselves best at bicycle pace, and a borrowed hotel bike is genuinely the fastest way between them.

The marquee ride is Wonders’ Way, the protected bike lane over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge: a steady climb above the Cooper River with harbor-wide views, then a descent into Mount Pleasant, where the Ben Sawyer Bikeway continues past Shem Creek and the Pitt Street Bridge to Fort Moultrie and Sullivan’s Island.

Half an hour east, Isle of Palms adds the beach chapter. Wild Dunes Resort rents bikes by the hour or week at walk-up rates, its paths thread 1,600 acres of maritime forest, and at low tide you can ride the hard-packed sand into downtown Isle of Palms. Local outfits deliver rental bikes free to houses across the barrier islands.

Riding works year-round here; spring and late fall are the sweet spots, while summer means early starts, water and an eye on afternoon storms. Guided e-bike tours out of Mount Pleasant cover the shoreline villages and film locations in about two and a half hours.
