Cycling in Chattanooga

Best season: March–May, September–November (summers are hot and humid)

Chattanooga packs two very different rides into one compact city. The easy one is the Tennessee Riverwalk, the paved greenway that hugs the Tennessee River from the St. Elmo district at the foot of Lookout Mountain through downtown — link it with the car-free Walnut Street Bridge and you can roll from the Aquarium to the North Shore without touching traffic. The ambitious one is the mountain itself: Outdoor Chattanooga’s guided Mountain-to-Town ride shuttles you up Lookout and drops nearly 1,500 feet over 13 miles of doubletrack and greenway back to the river, bike and helmet included for $25.

Getting a bike is the easy part. Bike Chattanooga’s share system puts hundreds of pedal bikes and e-bikes at dozens of solar-powered docks along the Riverwalk and downtown ($1 unlock plus per-minute pricing), Pedego on the North Shore rents e-bikes a block off the water, and Chattanooga Guided Adventures rents mountain bikes by the 24-hour block for Raccoon Mountain and Enterprise South, the area’s flagship singletrack systems.

Downtown hotels lean into the bike scene: booking sites list free guest bikes at both The Edwin — perched directly above the Walnut Street Bridge — and the Moxy, so confirm the details when you reserve and you may not need a rental at all. Ride in spring or fall if you can; summer afternoons are steamy, so save the Riverwalk for early morning and spend midday in the shade on the mountain.
