Cycling in Chicago
Best season: May–October
Chicago’s signature ride is the Chicago Lakefront Trail — 18.5 paved miles hugging Lake Michigan from Ardmore Avenue down to 71st Street, with bikes and pedestrians on separated paths since 2018. It’s flat, car-free, and strings together beaches, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, the Museum Campus, and four big lakefront parks, so a single afternoon loop doubles as a sightseeing circuit.
Few American cities make it this easy to ride without bringing a bike. A handful of downtown hotels lend wheels to guests — the Pendry stocks Specialized e-bikes, and Kimpton and JdV properties keep loaner cruisers by the door — while Divvy bike-share docks sit every few blocks along the trail for one-way hops.
If you’d rather have a proper rental or a guide, the trailside shops at Streeterville, Millennium Park, and Navy Pier rent everything from kids’ bikes to tandems with helmet, lock, and map included, and run daily lakefront and neighborhood tours spring through fall.
Summer weekends get genuinely crowded between North Avenue Beach and the Museum Campus, so start early or aim for the quieter miles south of McCormick Place. May, June, and September bring the best mix of warm weather and open pavement.
