Cycling in Cle Elum & Roslyn
Best season: May–October (Cascade foothills; the high rail-trail and Snoqualmie Tunnel open roughly late spring through fall)
Cle Elum and neighboring Roslyn (the “Northern Exposure” town) sit just off I-90 at the western Cascade trailhead cluster of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, the old Milwaukee Road corridor also known as the Iron Horse Trail. The Iron Horse trailhead is a short pedal from downtown Roslyn, and riders on wide gravel tires link toward Snoqualmie Pass through the roughly two-mile Snoqualmie Tunnel, with a web of forest-service roads and the Suncadia resort trail network filling out the surrounding terrain. The signature organized ride is the Iron Horse Gravel Ride, a Cascade Bicycle Club event confirmed for September 19–20, 2026: a two-day, out-and-back supported gravel tour of roughly 60 miles per day between Snoqualmie and Cle Elum on the rail-trail, capped at about 200 riders with SAG support, luggage haul, and rest stops. The Kittitas Valley’s HI90 Grindy gravel gran fondo also stages nearby at Dru Bru in Cle Elum in early June.
For renting, Ride Roslyn Bike + Board sits at 109 W Pennsylvania Ave, roughly two blocks from the Iron Horse trailhead, and rents e-bikes, hardtail and full-suspension mountain bikes, fat bikes, and kids’ bikes; its own site does not list drop-bar gravel bikes as a rental category, so call ahead if you specifically need a gravel rig. At Suncadia, the resort’s rental pavilion rents e-bikes, mountain bikes, and cruisers (helmet and lock included) for the resort’s own trail network.
Lodging clusters in walkable Roslyn and at the Suncadia resort. None of the local properties advertise a formal bike-loaner program, so plan to rent at Ride Roslyn or the Suncadia pavilion; Hotel Roslyn and Huckleberry House put you within a couple of blocks of both downtown Roslyn and the trailhead, while The Lodge at Suncadia has the rental pavilion on site.
Roslyn caps the summer over Labor Day weekend with Coal Miner Days, an early-September tribute to the town’s mining past with a logging show, the crowning of King Coal, and a downtown parade — an easy add-on to a spin on the nearby Coal Mines Trail.
