Cycling in Coeur d'Alene
Best season: May–September
Coeur d’Alene’s signature ride starts at the water: the paved North Idaho Centennial Trail runs some 23 miles right through town — and literally through the lakefront resort’s property — heading west past North Idaho College or east along Coeur d’Alene Lake Drive to Higgins Point, where the lake views do the work. It’s flat, scenic, cruiser-grade riding, with Sherman Avenue’s shops and restaurants making an easy three-mile round trip for a coffee run.
You can do all of it without bringing a bike. Overnight guests at The Coeur d’Alene Resort can borrow single-speed beach cruisers — helmet and basket included — in two-hour blocks through the concierge, though the fleet is small and summer demand is real, so reserve early. Two downtown shops fill the gaps: CDA Bike Co on 3rd Street rents everything from step-through comfort bikes to Bosch-motor e-bikes and carbon road bikes with helmets and locks included, and Vertical Earth puts you on a beach cruiser from $15 a half day, walk-ins only.
Coeur d’Alene also works as the comfortable end of a bigger North Idaho trail trip: the paved 72-mile Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes crosses the Panhandle to the east and south of the lake, and the Route of the Hiawatha’s tunnels and trestles are about an hour up I-90 — locally based ROW Adventures strings all three trails into a multi-day supported tour.
Shops and loaner fleets run roughly spring through fall. If the Hiawatha is on your list, note that CDA Bike Co routes those rentals through its Kellogg location, not the downtown Coeur d’Alene shop.
