Cycling in Columbus

Best season: April–October

Columbus is the halfway point of the Ohio to Erie Trail, the 326-mile route that crosses the state from the Ohio River in Cincinnati to Lake Erie in Cleveland. Through the city it follows the paved Scioto Trail, 12 miles of riverfront path that sweeps past the downtown Scioto Mile, while the shaded 13-mile Olentangy Trail branches north past Ohio State — so you can ride for an hour or a week without leaving the trail network.

It’s also one of the easier big cities to ride without bringing a bike. Two downtown hotels lend bikes to guests for free, Veo’s shared pedal and e-bikes (which replaced CoGo in 2025) are scattered across the core, and a delivery service will drop a hybrid at your hotel door. Guided e-bike tours cover the Short North, German Village and the river trails if you’d rather follow a local.

Spring through fall is the sweet spot: summer rides along the Scioto are warm but shaded stretches on the Olentangy help, and October brings foliage to both river corridors. Book bikes ahead on football Saturdays — the whole city moves toward the stadium, and hotel fleets go fast.
