Cycling in Copper Harbor

Best season: June–October

Copper Harbor sits at the far northern tip of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior and is a mountain-bike destination out of proportion to its size. It was named an IMBA Silver-Level Ride Center in 2012, with a network of roughly 40 miles of marked singletrack spanning gateway, cross-country, flow, and gravity trails — the main trailhead is right in the small downtown.

The hub for riders is Keweenaw Adventure Company, centrally located across from the primary trailhead, which rents a deep fleet (hardtails, full-suspension all-mountain and enduro bikes, e-bikes, and kids’ bikes), runs 2.5-hour and 5-hour guided singletrack tours, and offers shuttle service. For a trailside stay, the historic Keweenaw Mountain Lodge has three on-property trailheads and a Trek rental fleet (Fuel EX) for lodging guests, plus a bike wash, tool station, and pump track/station.

The practical riding season runs from about June into October, with fall color a highlight. As a very small town, Copper Harbor’s bike services concentrate around these two operators, so booking rentals, guided rides, or lodge bikes ahead in peak summer and fall is wise.

Over Labor Day weekend in September the village puts on the Copper Harbor Trails Fest, three days of cross-country, downhill, and enduro racing plus live music on the town’s well-known singletrack.
