Cycling in Coronado
Best season: year-round (mild coastal)
Coronado is made for easy cruising: the island is flat, and more than 25 miles of designated bike paths connect the Ferry Landing, Orange Avenue, Coronado Beach and the Hotel del. The signature ride is the Bayshore Bikeway, a roughly 24-mile mostly-protected loop around San Diego Bay that runs down the Silver Strand toward Imperial Beach and back through Chula Vista and downtown San Diego, much of it flat and car-separated.
The Hotel del Coronado is the landmark base; its on-property ‘Bike The Del’ concession (Coronado Bike & Surf) rents Priority beach cruisers and MURF e-bikes daily with helmets and locks. The Coronado Island Marriott includes daily bicycle use with its resort fee (a set number of bikes for a couple of hours, then an hourly rate) via on-site rental operators.
For rentals off the hotels, Holland’s Bikes & Beyond at the Coronado Ferry Landing rents cruisers (from about $10/hour, $45/day), pedal-assist e-bikes, tandems and its signature multi-passenger surreys, with helmets, locks and route maps included and the Bayshore Bikeway right alongside. Coronado Bike & Surf at the Hotel del is open to the public as well as guests.
Coronado’s biggest day is the Fourth of July, when the Orange Avenue parade, evening fireworks over the bay, and a morning run fill the island; expect closed streets that are pleasant to pedal early and packed by afternoon.
