Cycling in Crested Butte

Best season: Late June–September (wildflower peak mid–late July)

Crested Butte doesn’t just claim to be a birthplace of mountain biking — it has the trails to back it up. The one everyone comes for is Trail 401, a 14-mile high-alpine loop that climbs above 11,000 feet and then unspools into a descent through knee-high wildflowers, with Gothic Valley and Mount Crested Butte filling the skyline. Around it sits a dense web of local classics — Doctor Park, Strand Hill, Teocalli Ridge, the Reno–Flag–Bear loop — that keeps strong riders busy for a week.

Not every ride here needs a shuttle and a dropper post, though. This is a walkable Victorian town at nearly 9,000 feet, and the easiest way to cover Elk Avenue and the paved rec path is a cruiser. Purple Mountain Bed & Breakfast lends complimentary bikes to guests to “leave the car and ride around town,” and the historic Elk Mountain Lodge, a block off Elk Avenue, is known for the same — call ahead to confirm the current season’s fleet.

When you want the real thing, the shops are right downtown. Big Al’s Bicycle Heaven on Elk Avenue and The Alpineer at the four-way stop rent mountain bikes, e-bikes, cruisers, and kids’ rigs, and guided outfits like Western Spirit Cycling run multi-day singletrack tours for those who’d rather just follow a local who knows the dirt.

Come in summer — the high country only opens up. Riding runs roughly late June through September, and the 401’s wildflowers peak in mid-to-late July, the single best window to catch this place at its most famous.
