Cycling in Crosby
Best season: May–October for dirt; groomed fat-bike riding all winter
Crosby and its twin town Ironton are the gateway to the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, one of the Midwest’s great mountain-bike stories: a century of open-pit iron mining left behind red-dirt hills and deep, startlingly clear mine lakes, and the singletrack built over that reclaimed ground now runs somewhere between 55 and 70-plus miles across ~30 named trails — and it keeps growing. The dirt is famously flowy and progression-friendly, which is why Crosby markets itself as “Cuyuna Adventure Town USA” and holds Bicycle Friendly Community status.
The town setup is unusually rider-first. Cykel, at the base of the Ironton water tower a few blocks from the trails, publishes full rental rates — hardtails from $50 for four hours up to full-suspension e-MTBs, kids’ bikes, and winter fat bikes — while Red Raven in downtown Crosby pairs a rental counter (helmet, lock, and local beta included with every bike) with a proper café. Lodging plays along: Crosby Lofts’ Main Street rooms are ride-in/ride-out with both shops as listed partners, and True North Basecamp’s cabins sit three blocks from downtown with a package that bundles Cykel fat-bike rentals.
Not everyone needs singletrack — the paved Cuyuna Lakes State Trail links Crosby, Ironton, and the recreation area for cruiser-speed family rides past the lakes.
Prime dirt season is May through October, but this is a genuine year-round destination: the trails are groomed for fat bikes in winter and the shops rent accordingly. Summer weekends book out — reserve lodging and bikes ahead.
