Cycling in Cumberland

Best season: May–October (check seasonal tunnel closures in shoulder months)

Cumberland is the hinge of America’s most famous long-distance rail-trail system. At Canal Place downtown, the Great Allegheny Passage (about 150 crushed-limestone miles to Pittsburgh) meets the C&O Canal Towpath (184.5 miles to Georgetown in Washington, DC) — roughly 334 continuous car-free miles, and Cumberland is mile 0 of both. Through-riders roll off the trail straight into hotels that cater to them with bike-wash stations and secure storage.

You don’t need a week to taste it. The signature day ride is Wheelzup Adventures’ “Big Deal”: a shuttle from its Canal Place shop up to Deal, PA, then 25 miles of gentle, all-downhill GAP back to town through the Big Savage Tunnel, past the Eastern Continental Divide overlook, the Mason-Dixon Line, and Helmstetter’s Curve. Riding west under your own power, it’s a steady railroad-grade climb of about 15 miles to the trail town of Frostburg, where the Tunnel Hotel and Trail Inn rents bikes with advance notice and shuttles luggage for through-riders. Eastbound on the C&O, the Paw Paw Tunnel is the classic target.

Wheelzup’s Cumberland shop is the rental anchor — Trek hybrids, gravel bikes, e-bikes, tandems, and kids’ bikes from $25 a day, three minutes’ walk from the trail junction — and it runs a second outpost at Rocky Gap State Park, seven miles east, where a lakefront casino resort pairs with intermediate singletrack around Lake Habeeb.

Plan for May through October. The GAP’s high-country structures, including the Big Savage Tunnel, close seasonally in winter — check current closure dates on gaptrail.org before any shoulder-season trip.
