Cycling in Davis

Davis calls itself America’s Bicycle Capital, and the claim holds up: it was the first U.S. city to legislate standardized bike lanes, it hosts the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, and more than 100 miles of paths and greenbelt trails thread the flat, grid-friendly town. The riding is easy and social close in, with longer road loops out toward Winters, the Capay Valley and the Sacramento River delta.
For a stay, several downtown and campus-adjacent hotels lend guests bikes at no charge. The Hilton Garden Inn Davis Downtown (110 F Street, on the site of the former cyclist-favorite Hallmark Inn) offers complimentary bikes, and both the Holiday Inn Express and the Hyatt Place U.C. To rent something more serious, Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board on G Street rents gravel/road, mountain and e-bikes (road from about $109/day, mountain from $79). Green Bicycle Depot on Olive Drive and the student-run U.C. Davis Bike Barn round out the options for cruisers and city bikes. Spring and fall ride best; midsummer afternoons in the valley routinely top 95°F, so locals go early.
Davis, a longtime hub of American cycling, is home to the Davis Double Century, a 200-mile ride the Davis Bike Club has run on the third Saturday of May since 1970 — one of California’s oldest and best-supported doubles.
