Davis has been a mountain-bike town since the sport’s early days, and the riding still ranges from mellow to legendary. The approachable classic is the Blackwater Canyon Trail, a railroad-grade descent along the rim of Blackwater Canyon; the bucket-list ride is the North Fork Mountain Trail, an IMBA Epic ridge traverse that most riders do as a shuttled point-to-point.

Blackwater Bikes, the shop on the river in the middle of town, makes all of it work: rentals from hardtails and gravel bikes to full-suspension rigs and e-bikes (helmet and repair kit included), plus shuttles to the Blackwater Canyon and North Fork Mountain trailheads. The shop even runs seven lodging units upstairs and next door, so you can sleep a flight of stairs from your rental.

For families and first-timers, Canaan Valley Resort State Park — a few miles south — rents bikes at its Recreation Center with helmets included and about 18 miles of marked trails for every ability, with a full-service lodge on site.

At roughly 3,200 feet, the valley stays cooler than the lowlands all summer. May through October is prime; pack a layer for fast canyon descents and keep an eye on afternoon storms.
