Cycling in Door County
Best season: May–October
Door County is the wooded peninsula reaching into Lake Michigan that Wisconsinites treat as their Cape Cod — a string of harbor villages, cherry orchards, and state parks made for unhurried riding. The centerpiece is the Sunset Trail in Peninsula State Park, a 10.2-mile crushed-limestone loop that runs flat and wide through the woods to Nicolet Beach, easy enough for kids and trailers. Beyond the park, low-traffic county roads link Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, and Baileys Harbor, and the 48-mile crushed-limestone Ahnapee State Trail runs dead-flat south from Sturgeon Bay for anyone who just wants to ride and turn around.
The lodging here is unusually generous with bikes. In Fish Creek, Peninsula Park-View Resort sits directly across from the park entrance and lends guests complimentary comfort bikes, a tandem, and a kid’s tag-along by appointment — plus it keeps the county’s only free DIY repair stand. In Ephraim, the waterfront Water Street Inn and Ephraim Shores Resort both list guest bikes among their amenities, so you can roll to the village shops and beach without renting.
When you do want a rental, the peninsula is well covered. Nor Door Sport & Cyclery, Door County’s full-service shop, rents everything from recreational cruisers to carbon road and e-bikes out of Fish Creek and Sturgeon Bay; Bay Shore Outfitters in Sturgeon Bay does e-bikes at $20 the first hour; and self-serve fat-tire e-bike pods near the park run $30 an hour. For a guided outing, Door County Kayak Tours leads e-bike tours of Peninsula State Park and Cave Point from $99.
Come May through October. Summer is the peak, but book bikes and rooms early — and consider September and early October, when the crowds thin and the peninsula’s hardwoods turn. Note that Peninsula State Park requires a vehicle admission sticker to enter.
