Cycling in Duluth
Best season: May–October
Duluth rides big for a Midwestern city. The all-volunteer Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores (COGGS) have built out more than 110 miles of purpose-built, mountain-bike-optimized trail across the hillside, stitched together by the Duluth Traverse, a 40-plus-mile cross-town artery of beginner-friendly singletrack, doubletrack, and gravel. Gravity riders head to the lift-served Spirit Mountain Bike Park, while the paved Lakewalk and Willard Munger State Trail cover the casual and long-distance road crowd.
For a bike-oriented stay, Beacon Pointe on Lake Superior sits directly on the Lakewalk and includes complimentary bikes for guests, making it easy to roll straight onto the paved waterfront path toward Canal Park or Brighton Beach. The Willard Munger Inn on the west side is a longtime cyclist favorite next to the Munger State Trail.
Rentals cluster in the city: Continental Ski and Bike rents mountain, enduro, and pedal-assist e-bikes with online booking, and the seasonal Traverse Duluth offers low-cost half- and full-day rentals near the trails. Day Tripper of Duluth runs guided mountain- and fat-bike tours on the COGGS network. The practical season runs roughly May through October, with fall color a highlight.
Duluth’s biggest weekend is Grandma’s Marathon, run the third Saturday in June along Lake Superior into Canal Park; the lakeside Lakewalk it finishes on is also a favorite easy ride.
