Cycling in Durango

Best season: May–June, September–October

Durango rides on two speeds at once. Right through the middle of downtown runs the Animas River Trail, a flat, paved ribbon of about seven miles along the Animas that you can pedal in flip-flops between coffee and dinner. Climb into the hills above town and the mood changes entirely: Horse Gulch, Overend Mountain Park, and the high Colorado Trail toward Hermosa deliver the technical, lung-testing singletrack that made Durango a mountain-bike town decades before it was fashionable.

You don’t have to bring a bike. Two historic downtown hotels put wheels under you: The Rochester Hotel keeps a fleet of free cruisers — each with its own oddball name — for guests to roll out to the river trail, and the Durango Quality Inn up on North Main lends cruisers kitted with a basket, lock, and bell. Call ahead either way; the fleets are small and can be seasonal.

For anything past a river cruise, Main Avenue has the shops. Pedal the Peaks rents everything from thirty-dollar townies to carbon full-suspension and e-mountain bikes with helmets included, and 2nd Ave Sports stocks high-end Yeti, Santa Cruz, and Trek trail bikes for the serious days. Guided outfits like Hermosa Tours will shuttle you to the good stuff and ride it with you.

Time it for late spring or early fall. Durango sits at 6,500 feet with real seasons — the high singletrack dries out by late May and rides beautifully into October, while the low river trail is pleasant almost any warm day. Summer afternoons bring mountain thunderstorms, so start your climbs early.
