Cycling in East Burke
Best season: Late May–October
East Burke is the beating heart of Kingdom Trails — a 100-plus-mile, purpose-built mountain-bike network stitched across private farmland and forest in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, and one of the most celebrated places to ride singletrack in the eastern United States. The riding is famous for flowy, forested cross-country trails rather than raw technical descents, with everything from green machine-built flow to black-diamond roots and rock spread across the ridges around Darling Hill and the village itself.
One thing to know before you go: the network is run by the nonprofit Kingdom Trails Association, and a trail pass is required to ride — an adult day pass runs about $20, and helmets are mandatory on the system. Passes are sold online and at the Welcome Center in East Burke village, and they fund the trail maintenance and landowner relationships that keep this whole thing open.
The standout base is the Wildflower Inn on Darling Hill, where the trails literally run through the 300-acre property — you can ride from the front door. On-site, Rifugio rents premium full-suspension bikes (from $135/day), e-mountain bikes, and kids’ rigs, and KC&E Adventures runs guided rides and lessons, including a roughly five-hour Kingdom Tour of the marquee trails. In the village, East Burke Sports rents Santa Cruz bikes right at the trailhead with on-trail insurance included, and the Village Inn keeps a dedicated bike room steps from the singletrack.
Plan for late May through October — trails close during mud season and winter, midsummer is prime, and the last weeks of September into early October bring the Northeast Kingdom’s legendary fall color over some of the best riding of the year.
