Cycling in Emporia
Best season: April–June, September–October
Emporia is the town that made gravel riding a destination sport. Every spring it hosts Life Time UNBOUND Gravel, the world’s marquee gravel race, sending thousands of riders out of downtown and into the Flint Hills on courses from 25 to 350 miles. The rest of the year, those same minimally maintained ranch roads are yours — open tallgrass prairie, big rollers, and almost no traffic.
You don’t need to bring a bike to sample it. Downtown on Commercial Street, Merchant Cycles — the gravel specialist that grew out of Gravel City Adventure — handles rentals and demos and has mapped the area’s iconic routes, while Eclectic Bikes a block away rents affordable town bikes and tandems with helmets, locks, and lights included.
Lodging is standard highway-exit hotel stock, and none of the chains advertise loaner bikes; the standout for cyclists is a vacation rental near Emporia State that includes bikes with your stay. Book many months ahead for race week — Unbound sells out the entire town.
Come in late spring or fall for green hills and rideable temperatures, and set your bike up tubeless: the flint rock that gives these hills their name is famously sharp.
