Cycling in Eugene

Best season: May–October

Eugene is one of Oregon’s most established cycling cities, holding Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community status from the League of American Bicyclists (renewed 2024). The centerpiece for casual and touring riders is the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path System, roughly 12 miles of paved, car-free path along both banks of the Willamette River connecting Eugene and Springfield.

For a bike-first stay, the riverside Valley River Inn sits steps from the Ruth Bascom path and offers complimentary seasonal loaner bikes to guests. Cyclists who prefer a themed B&B can look to Velo Bed and Breakfast, run by a custom frame builder, which gives a discount to guests who arrive by bike.

Rentals are easy to find: Shift Community Cycles, a nonprofit shop, rents e-bikes, electric cargo bikes, and adjustable Bike Friday bikes, while Bicycle Way of Life rents mountain, road, and touring bikes from its downtown location with helmet and lock included. The riding season runs comfortably from late spring through mid-fall.

Every July the Eugene area gathers just west of town in Veneta for the Oregon Country Fair, a long-running three-day arts, music, and craft event in the woods along the Long Tom River.
