Cycling in Eureka Springs

Best season: March-November (spring and fall are prime; summer rides but is hot and humid)

Eureka Springs sits inside the OZ Trails mountain-biking region of Northwest Arkansas. The headline system is Lake Leatherwood City Park, a 1,600-acre park with roughly 25 miles of cross-country singletrack plus a downhill-specific gravity zone of seven mile-long lines that riders reach by paid shuttle to two stone platforms at the summit. Purpose-built trails at The Great Passion Play property (Berryville side) and nearby Marble Flats round out the options, and the town is a short drive from the wider OZ Trails network (Coler, Back 40, Hobbs).

For a bike-first stay, Topo Motel sits at the top of the Lake Leatherwood gravity trails: guests can ride out from their rooms and use the property as a shuttle basecamp, and the owners are mountain bikers who help arrange rides. Downtown, the Basin Park Hotel advertises a ‘Two Wheels’ lodging deal with covered, locked bike storage, and the city runs cabins and camping right at Lake Leatherwood for riders who want to sleep at the trailhead.

Rent or get shuttled in town: Adventure Mountain Outfitters on Spring Street is a full-service shop with rentals, guiding, shuttles and a certified suspension tech, while SUP Outfitters rents full-suspension mountain bikes and delivers or shuttles to the trailheads. Slaughter Trail Guides is the licensed shuttle provider for the Lake Leatherwood Gravity Project. Plan for spring or fall for the best trail conditions.

Eureka Springs, a hub of the Ozarks’ Oz Trails, hosts the Fat Tire Festival each September, a mountain-bike weekend of enduro and downhill racing, group rides, and clinics based at Lake Leatherwood.
