Cycling in Fargo
Best season: May–September
Fargo’s riding is the opposite of epic — and that’s the appeal. The city sits on the table-flat floor of the Red River Valley, and paved paths follow both banks of the Red River between Fargo and Moorhead: from Lindenwood Park you can ride roughly 5.5 miles of riverside path north past downtown, continue onto the Mickelson/Tricorn path, or hop a bridge to Moorhead’s river-corridor trails. The metro’s wider bike-path network runs to a couple hundred miles, all of it beginner-flat.
Getting a bike is easy. The Fargo Park District rents fun cycles, low riders, and surreys (helmets included) right in Lindenwood Park, the riverside park where the path network starts — ideal for families, though the park bikes stay inside the park. For real mileage, GoGo Rental hires e-bikes by the day on Main Avenue, and several south-Fargo hotels — including the Delta by Marriott and Fairfield Inn & Suites — list free loaner bikes for guests (call ahead to confirm the fleet before you count on it).
One caution for planners: Fargo’s famous Great Rides bike share shut down for good years ago, so ignore older guides that mention it. Come between May and September — winters here are serious, and spring flooding can briefly close riverside segments — and build your ride around a stop at the Great Northern Bicycle Company, the full-service shop inside downtown’s historic train depot.
