Cycling in Flagstaff

Flagstaff sits at about 7,000 feet in a ponderosa pine forest, giving it a genuine cool-summer riding season while the rest of Arizona is too hot. The Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS) links town to a huge network of forest singletrack, the lift-served Fort Tuthill Bike Park, and the Arizona National Scenic Trail, which passes through the area on its way from Mexico to Utah. Mountain biking dominates, but there is strong gravel and road riding on the surrounding forest roads.
For a bike-oriented stay, the High Country Motor Lodge on Route 66 lists complimentary bicycles among its amenities, making downtown and the FUTS easy to reach car-free (confirm the bike program at booking). Rentals are well covered: Absolute Bikes and Flagstaff Bicycle Revolution are both downtown with full rental fleets and repair service, and Single Track Bikes on Riordan Road rounds out the shops. Seasonal hourly and daily rentals also run out of Fort Tuthill County Park near the bike park.
Guided options include Flagstaff E-Bike Tours, which runs guided e-bike rides on forest and Route 66 country routes from a base west of town, and Hermosa Tours, which operates a multi-day Flagstaff-to-Sedona mountain bike traverse along the Arizona Trail. Peak riding is roughly May through October; higher trails hold snow into spring and can see monsoon storms in July and August.
Flagstaff’s festival season opens each June with the Flagstaff Hullabaloo in Wheeler Park, a community celebration of music, food, and giant puppets that kicks off Saturday morning with a costumed community bike parade.
