Cycling in Franconia Notch
Best season: Late May–October
The signature ride here is the Franconia Notch Recreation Path, a roughly nine-mile paved trail that threads the length of Franconia Notch State Park between the Flume Gorge visitor center and the Skookumchuck trailhead on Route 3. It runs in the woods alongside the parkway but feels a world away, passing Echo Lake, Profile Lake and the old Old Man of the Mountain site, the Basin, and Flume Gorge, all under the cliffs of Cannon Mountain and Mount Lafayette. The full out-and-back is about twenty miles with around 1,500 feet of climbing, which is exactly why most casual riders shuttle to the top and enjoy the gentle descent back.
That shuttle is the local specialty. Sport Thoma in Lincoln rents Giant all-terrain bikes and drives you to the high end of the path with helmet and lock included, so the ride back is mostly downhill sightseeing. Prefer a little electric help? Franconia Basecamp on Main Street in Franconia rents RadPower e-bikes that come with a basket, lock, helmet, water bottle, and a route map. And next to the Franconia Inn, the White Mountain Bike Shop — the “Bike Barn” run by Bobby Big Ring — rents road, mountain, fat, and kids’ bikes and knows every trail in the notch.
The Franconia Inn is the area’s true cycling basecamp: an adjacent rental shop, a free community gear library, and genuinely guided rides led by the shop owner, from two-hour outings to full-day gravel tours. For a bigger trip, the regional Bike The Whites runs inn-to-inn tours through these same mountains. Down in Lincoln, the RiverWalk Resort at Loon puts you minutes from the notch, though you’ll rent your bike in town rather than at the resort.
Ride between late May and October, with late September and early October the standout for foliage. One note for 2026: the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is closed for a replacement project this summer, but the paved path stays open daily — so plan to shuttle by van rather than by tram.
