Cycling in Friday Harbor
Best season: April–September
Friday Harbor is the car-optional cycling gateway to the San Juan Islands: the Washington State Ferry drops you in the middle of town, and three rental outfits sit within a couple of blocks of the dock. The classic ride is the San Juan Island loop — rolling country roads out to Lime Kiln Point State Park, where you can watch for orcas from the bluff, then on past American Camp and Cattle Point at the island’s south end or north to Roche Harbor and the lavender farm.
The terrain is honest: rolling hills, a few punchy climbs, and narrow shoulders in places, which is why every shop in town leads with electric-assist fleets. Standard hybrids start around $40–45 a day and e-bikes around $65–70, with helmets and locks included, so day-tripping without a car is genuinely easy.
Downtown, one boutique hotel keeps a rack of complimentary retro beach cruisers for guests on a first-come basis — perfect for the harbor and nearby beaches — and a guided-tour outfit up the street will build a custom half- or full-day island ride with a naturalist bent if you’d rather not navigate.
Rental season runs roughly April through September. Summer brings the longest daylight and the best whale activity; book bikes (and ferry-weekend lodging) ahead in July and August.
