Cycling in Fruita

Best season: March–May and September–November

Fruita is one of the country’s premier mountain-biking towns, sitting between the flowy 18 Road (North Fruita Desert) trails and the technical Kokopelli trail system, with the Colorado National Monument minutes away. The compact downtown is walkable and bike-centric, with shops, cafes, breweries, and the long-running Fruita Fat Tire Festival.

The Balanced Rock Inn is built for riders: downtown location within minutes of the trails, plus a bike wash and tool station, trailer parking (reserve ahead), and rooms that fit two full-size mountain bikes for secure overnight storage. It’s a short roll to downtown coffee and dinner after a day on the trails.

Rentals are handled by two strong shops downtown: Over the Edge Sports (a Fruita mountain-bike institution) and Colorado Backcountry Biker, which rents full-suspension, hardtail, gravel, and e-MTBs (full-suspension from ~$75/24 hours) and runs supported hut-to-hut trips on the Western Slope. Because summers are hot in the high desert, riding is best in spring and fall.

Fruita’s signature gathering is the spring Fruita Fat Tire Festival, a mountain-bike weekend of group rides, demos, and music built around the 18 Road trails; it is on a one-year pause and returns in 2027.
