Galena sits in the unglaciated Driftless corner of Illinois, which means the flattest state in the Midwest saved all its hills for this one town. The easy ride is the Galena River Trail, eight miles of finely crushed rock rolling from the edge of the 19th-century downtown along the river toward the Mississippi backwaters — gentle grades, big scenery, no traffic.
Everything beyond the trail tilts. The surrounding country roads climb and dive through farm valleys, which is exactly why e-bikes have taken over here: the outfitter two blocks from the trailhead rents fat-tire and cruiser e-bikes by the half-day and runs a popular ride-out-to-the-winery package with a shuttle home. Gravity riders get their own venue at Chestnut Mountain, whose Farside Bike Park runs lift-served downhill trails above the Mississippi on summer weekends.
Lodging leans country-inn rather than chain hotel, and a couple of them keep bikes for guests — one 500-acre inn lends bikes for the back roads outright. Confirm the bike details when you book, since fleets at small inns come and go.
May through October is the season. Summer weekends fill the town, so ride the river trail in the morning and save the Main Street browsing for the hot part of the day.
